Bloomberg reports fracking relies on 'sealed settlements'

"Drillers Silence Fracking Claims with Sealed Settlements"

Bloomberg notes that "The strategy keeps data from regulators, policymakers, the news media and health researchers, and makes it difficult to challenge the industry's claim that fracking has never tainted anyone's water."

Here's a link to the full Bloomberg report.

The most significant parts of the report include:

  • A graphic titled, "How Gas Drilling Could Spoil Your Drinking Water"
  • The gas industry's narrow definition of "fracing" [sic] which is critical to their careful assertions about contamination
  • Conclusions from "hundreds of regulatory and legal filings" reviewed by Bloomberg
  • The stories of four particular settlements (in spite of the enforced silence of the principals)

What's newsworthy, of course, is not the existence of the contamination, nor of the sealed settlements, but that a "mainstream" source is now bringing this story to the attention of investors.
